A good refreeze of the snow surface occurred overnight.  Wet snow instabilities may form as daytime warming occurs throughout the day.  Monitor the snow surface and how much warming is occuring in your area while out in the backcountry.

    A good overnight refreeze of the snowpack occurred throughout the forecast area with below freezing temperatures at all remote sensors above 8000'.  Firm melt freeze crusts are expected this morning with softening as daytime warming occurs throughout the day.  The forecasted mostly cloudy skies may give way to sunny skies with more solar radiation than expected.  Areas that received the most snow from Monday night's storm could still produce some wet loose avalanches involving all the recent storm snow.  

    Look for signs of unstable wet snow including: roller balls, pinwheels, wet loose avalanches, and deep unsupportable snow.  As always, pay attention to the terrain above you and limit exposure below steep avalanche terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

  • The upper snowpack has started to refreeze depending on location, but deep wet snow still exists below the refrozen crust. 
  • Meltwater has reached the old facet layer that was buried on Feb 14 on some shaded NW-N-NE aspects. As this layer refreezes it will gain strength and likely start to assimilate into the snowpack. 
  • Snowmelt has intensified on all aspects and elevations throughout the forecast region.  Most SE-S-SW aspects have exposed bare ground in many areas limiting over snow travel options on these aspects.  More obstacles along with running and open water exist.
