Triggering a large, destructive avalanche is unlikely, and generally stable avalanche conditions exist. The most probable location to trigger a large avalanche is on very steep (>35°) terrain on the north half of the compass. Watch for small pockets of wind-drifted snow at upper elevations.

    Triggering a large avalanche on weak snow is unlikely, but not impossible. Weak layers of faceted snow exist in the middle of the snowpack and near the ground on most slopes. Avalanches involving these layers will be 2-3 feet deep and up to 5 feet deep on heavily wind-affected slopes. Signs of instability such as cracking, collapsing, or recent avalanches will likely not be present before triggering a large avalanche capable of propagating long distances. You're most likely to trigger an avalanche where the snowpack is thin - very steep (>35°), rocky, convex terrain should remain suspect. Multiple tracks on a slope do not indicate stability with this problem type. Manage your risk by limiting your time on very steep slopes previously loaded by the wind.

Avalanche Discussion

A small storm overnight brought 2 - 4 inches of new snow to Togwotee with light to moderate west winds. With a few warm days with subsequent colder conditions, Togwotee's danger rating has been dropped to low. It's important to remember that Low danger does not mean NO danger. Here are a few things to keep in mind. 

  • Fresh wind slabs may exist in upper elevation terrain. They will likely be small and isolated to steep terrain near ridgelines. While not large, these small pockets formed on firm surfaces and should be fairly easy to identify. 
  • Loose snow avalanches may occur in very steep terrain. These will be isolated to the new snow, which fell on slick crusts. Colder temperatures should help the new snow glue onto these crusts, but in areas of higher snow accumulation, you may encounter small sluffs. These could occur naturally as the day warms up, so pay attention to the terrain above you. 
  • Wet snow may still linger beneath you. Over the last 48 hours, conditions have trended colder and cloudier. Last night's refreeze combined with today's colder temperatures should leave a firm crust on almost every aspect at every elevation. If you do encounter softer, unsupportable snow, consider moving to a different slope. 
  • Cornices - Cooler temperatures should help stabilize cornices. Even so, these cornices have grown large. I would give them room and minimize my time underneath these large hunks of snow.

Several bear sightings have been reported this spring. When planning for the day, bear spray, group travel, and appropriate food storage should be considered.
