Kernpunkte

Look for another round of wet snow instabilities to emerge on steep, sunny slopes as the day heats up. As you gain elevation into the wind zone, use caution around slopes that harbor wind-stiffened slabs or around cornices in the sun that may be weakening with daytime warming.

Another mild night followed by a warm, sunny day will reinvigorate wet snow instabilities on slopes that catch significant sun. You'll likely start seeing signs of warming on south-east facing slopes by mid-morning with weakening wet surfaces forming on west by early afternoon. Pay close attention to your aspect and the time of day to reduce your exposure to wet avalanche concerns.  Head to more shaded slopes or scoured surfaces once you notice rollerballs shedding or if you notice yourself skinking past your ankles in wet, mushy snow.

Wet loose avalanches often initiate where snow sheds off rocks and trees onto the slope below. Note that there are both small rollerballs and wet loose avalanches in this image.

Avalanche Discussion

Friday marks the third day of significant warming and the warmest day of the week. Wet snow surfaces are likely becoming more widespread, except for true northerlies that still hold colder snow and better riding conditions.

While triggering a wind slab has trended unlikely, it's not impossible, especially the higher you climb into upper elevations. A strong wind event earlier this week left a patchwork of hard slabs and scoured surfaces in exposed terrain. Be thoughtful with your terrain selection and approach smooth, drifted over slopes with some suspicion. Before riding onto steeper, wind-loaded features, consider tweaking small test slopes or do a quick snowpack test to check for instability. Cracks shooting out from your machine/feet or drum-like surfaces are clues you found an unstable wind slab.
