On Saturday large avalanches will be likely. We have observed many recent avalanches in both wind drifted snow and within our recent storm snow. This recent snow has fallen on a weak layer throughout our terrain. This may cause avalanches to propagate farther than expected. Your best option is to use conservative decision making and avoid slopes 30 degrees or steeper.

    On Friday I found both natural and human triggered wind slabs on north to easterly slopes. Some of these wind slabs were sliding on weak layers (facets) that are sitting on a rain crust. 

    With more snow expected and existing reactive wind slabs, human triggered avalanches in wind drifted snow will be likely for Saturday. These wind slabs might propagate farther and wider than expected due to weak layers within the snowpack. 

    Look for clues of wind slabs such as drifts of snow, textured surface, pillow-like features. Wind slabs often form below ridgelines, areas that collect snow and open slopes where wind can freely blow snow (i.e. burn zones). Other red flags to be on the lookout for are cracking, whumpfing and recent avalanches. For Saturday it is best to avoid wind loaded avalanche slopes 30 degrees or steeper.

    Human triggered storm slabs will continue to be likely near and below treeline. Large storm slabs have proven to remain active and easy to trigger. Some of these slabs are sitting on weak snow and have been propagating farther and wider than expected. 

    Be on the look out for cracking, whumfing and recent slab avalanches. You can use small and safe indicator slopes to assess the snowpack as well as hand shears. If in doubt stick to slopes lower than 30 degrees.

Avalanche Discussion

On Friday I toured around Tam McArthur Rim. While touring I found many human triggered and natural avalanches ranging from small to large in size (D1-D2). Several of these avalanches appeared to slide on a crust layer that is buried down 24-27" (60-70cm). On top of this crust layer I found a layer of weak snow (facets). We also experienced several collapses and shooting cracks. These are all red flags that the snowpack is unstable. 

There has been many reports of small to large avalanches within our zone on Friday. Thank you all for submitting public observations.
