Kernpunkte

Avalanches large enough to bury or injure a rider will be unlikely on Saturday.  As the temperature climbs well above freezing, we may see smaller wet avalanches on the steeper, sunnier slopes.  Even small wet avalanches can sometimes be forceful, so don't completely let your guard down on steep, south slopes if there are cliffs, gullies or other features that could make an otherwise small avalanche more dangerous.  Whenever you are riding in avalanche terrain, pay attention to the snow, and use appropriate travel techniques like carrying avalanche rescue gear, and traveling one at a time on steep slopes.

    Wet Loose avalanches will be possible on Saturday as the previously dry snow from Wednesday night melts.  Wet Loose avalanches will be limited to the steepest, sunniest slopes and will likely be small.  Watch for natural Wet Loose avalanches below rocks and cliffs, as well as rollerballs and pinwheels as signs that the snowpack is losing cohesion.  I expect we'll see some of these signs on the steepest sunny slopes, but I would be surprised to see larger Wet Loose avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

The monument picked up about 5 inches of new snow on Wednesday night.  On Friday this snow was melting in the sun, and trees were dripping a bit, but I expect the surface snow stayed dry on open shady slopes.
