For Wednesday, wet avalanches will be the most obvious concern as they could occur naturally with warming temperatures and sun. At upper elevations, you may be able to trigger avalanches in recently drifted slabs of new snow. Watch for dynamic and changing conditions and move to lower-angle slopes if you see recent avalanches and snow that cracks or slides easily.

    Watch for loose wet avalanches as the day progresses. Sun and warming temperatures could initiate natural avalanches and prime steep, sun-exposed slopes for triggered avalanches. Monitor the surface snow and look for moist recent snow that slides easily on test slopes. Loose avalanches will generally be small. In the Wenatchee Mountains, wet avalanches will be small at best.

    Don't step out onto a slope that has a glide crack on it. Minimize your exposure under large, overhung cornices, cliffs holding cornice-like chunks of snow, or other unstable snow features. Ideally, pick a route that avoids crossing under these features.

    You may be able to trigger avalanches in dry snow where fresh wind slabs have formed on leeward sides of ridges. Strong southwesterly winds should be actively transporting snow into early morning on Wednesday, so the danger will be easy to see. Cracking in the snow and recent avalanches are also red-flag signs of the danger. Use small test slopes to see how easily the snow slides before committing to larger slopes steeper than 35 degrees. Be ready for changing surface conditions as you move through the terrain and climb in elevation.

Avalanche Discussion

Up to 6 inches of snow fell near the Cascade crest on Tuesday. At middle and low elevations, this storm was a mix of rain and moist snow. Precipitation started as rain on Sunday and snow levels dropped on Monday. On Tuesday, an NWAC forecaster traveled in the Wenatchee Mountains. They found poor visibility and stormy conditions with 2 inches of new snow. The avalanche danger was minimal, though the new snow slid easily on the old snow crust.

Observers have traveled to some further-flung destinations in the past week, including Beverly Creek, The Enchantments, and the Trinity area. They reported natural wet avalanches over the weekend and during hot sunny weather last week.
