Kernpunkte

Avalanches large enough to bury or injure a rider are unlikely for Sunday in the Monument. If a small slide were to happen, it would likely be on steep sunny slopes later in the day after the snow surface has been heated enough to become unsupportable slush. Remember that small avalanches have the capability to be high consequence by knocking you off your feet. Always carry avalanche rescue gear and use safe travel practices.

    Nothing really new to report on this front. The sustained Melt Freeze cycle we've been experiencing this month has been pretty ideal to set us up for relatively good snow stability and great corn riding. There have been good overnight freezes followed by sunny days softening the upper surface snow. While wet loose avalanches have been possible on sunny slopes, there hasn't been much instabilities observed (i.e. limited loose wet avalanche activity). Going forward, keep an eye out on night time lows and day time highs. If temps don't drop below freezing overnight, expect the wet loose problem to increase in likelihood and start taking shape earlier in the day. Pay attention to the snow surface, and if you notice active rollerballing or slushy snow that penetrates above your boot top, consider low angle or more shaded slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

This forecast will be the last one for the 24/25 Newberry season. As some general beta going forward- those keen for a ~3 mile bike ride to ski mission could be rewarded over the coming weeks out at Paulina. The melt freeze cycle of late has resulted in excellent corn skiing out there. The road is now plowed from 10-mile Sno Park well past the obsidian flow. The snowpack is holding up well with our snow depth station near the lake showing over 4' of snow still remaining at low elevations. Take advantage of the bountiful winter and beautiful Spring weather! Be safe, have fun, and submit public observations if you are able. Thanks for a good season :)
