Warming temperatures and strong sunshine will create small wet loose avalanches on steep slopes. Pay attention to signs of warming surfaces such as rollerballs, and wet, heavy, or punchy snow. Use caution on slopes steeper than 35 degrees when you notice these signs of instability.

    Strong sunshine and rapidly warming temperatures will create unstable snow in the form of small wet loose avalanches on Wednesday. Look for indicators of wet activity such as moist surface snow, rollerballs, and other small fan-shaped avalanches. The potential size of loose wet slides will increase where you find more recent snow especially as you go further west in the zone. While loose avalanches are predictable, they may grow larger and could be dangerous in consequential terrain and near terrain traps. 

    Directly north facing slopes at upper elevations may stay cooler, although temperatures should be warm enough that we could see wet slides occur even on shaded slopes at lower elevations.

    (3/30/2021) A small, ski triggered loose wet avalanche on a southeast facing slope at 6,300ft near Mission Ridge.

Avalanche Discussion

We are in a warming trend, and Wednesday should be the warmest day of the week. Cool overnight temperatures should quickly change, and expect snow surfaces to melt down quickly with the rapidly warming temperatures. On Tuesday the sun came out, and skiers could initiate very small loose wet slides and rollerballs on steep east and south-facing slopes near Mission Ridge with daytime warming. Wind slabs were observed to have become well bonded, and were not reactive to ski triggering. This could be different in the higher peaks and closer to the crest where more snow fell. A warming trend will continue to destabilize the new snow as it transitions from dry snow to wet snow on Wednesday.

A strong winter storm brought heavy snowfall late on Sunday with strong to extreme westerly winds. Snow totals by Monday were: Trinity Snotel 8", Fish Lake 13", Sasse Ridge 10". Winds gusted to 70mph on Dirty Face and over 100mph at Mission Ridge.

A crust and adjacent weak layer formed in mid-January can still be found about 2-6 feet below the surface throughout most of the zone.  Several different avalanche cycles released down to this interface, with the last cycle producing avalanches up to size D4.  Avalanches on the mid-Jan crust/facet layer are now unlikely with the last one reported on March 1st.  We're watching the upcoming weather pattern for major warm-ups or storm events to see when and if these deeper layers will be tested again. The most suspect areas for deep persistent slabs are shallow, rocky, and unsupported slopes, especially where overhead cornice fall could trigger avalanches.w
