Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh deposits of unstable windslab will develop during the evening and overnight, mainly on North-West to North-East aspects above 850 metres. There will be a period of instability overnight as this windslab turns to wet snow. Stability in this snow will improve as the temperature lowers. However, there will be further accumulations of unstable windslab, mainly on North-East to South-East aspects above 850 metres. Cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Southerly Gale force winds will veer Westerly early morning and become very strong through the day. Precipitation initially falling as snow above 600 metres will then turn to rain and sleet on the summits for a time overnight before further snow showers fall above 500 meters during the day. The freezing level will be around 800 metres then rise above the summits overnight, lowering to around 600 metres during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Light Southerly winds increased to moderate during the day. Mostly dry throughout the period. Sunny during the morning then cloud developing in the afternoon. Clear skies overnight and frost in the glens. The freezing level rose through the day to around 900 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The old snowpack is mostly refrozen, firm and stable. Isolated and shallow accumulations of soft snow are present on North-West through North to East aspects above 850 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low.
