Avalanche Activity

Above approximately 2200 m the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. Slight increase in avalanche danger.

Over a wide area over a wide area 10 to 15 cm of snow, but less in some localities, will fall above approximately 1000 m. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from southwesterly directions, mostly small wind slabs will form at intermediate and high altitudes. The brittle wind slabs represent the main danger. They can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on very steep slopes and in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. The avalanche prone locations are sometimes covered with new snow and are therefore difficult to recognise. Dry snow slides and avalanches are possible as the day progresses, especially on very steep slopes adjacent to ridgelines.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 40 cm of snow fell on Monday in all altitude zones. The areas bordering France are most affected. Since Monday the weather has been cold. The covering of new snow is soft. The deep wind slabs have bonded quite well with the old snowpack in all aspects. Towards its surface, the snowpack is largely stable and has a loosely bonded surface, in particular above approximately 2300 m. Towards its base, the snowpack is well consolidated.

Tendency

Saturday: The weather will be mild. Afternoon: Down to intermediate altitudes snow will fall. The danger will increase during the day. The wind slabs will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. Dry and wet avalanches are possible.
