Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs represent the main danger.

As a consequence of the northerly wind the wind slabs will increase in size additionally. The fresh snow of Friday as well as the wind slabs can be released easily, even by a single winter sport participant,. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large dry avalanches are to be expected.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 15 to 25 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell on Friday above approximately 1500 m. Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. The new snow can be released naturally in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2200 m. In particular at elevated altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
