You can trigger an avalanche in freshly drifted snow at upper elevations. Look for signs of recent wind-loading, such as new cornices, smooth rounded pillows of snow, or cracking in the new snow to indicate possible danger. North through east to southeast-facing slopes are the most likely places to find this problem. Seek out wind-sheltered and lower-angle slopes to avoid this problem.
