Avalanche Summary

An Avalanche Watch is in effect for the Southern San Juan Mountains. New snow and strong winds will create very dangerous avalanche conditions starting Thursday night and lasting through Saturday. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended during this time.

You could trigger an avalanche where winds are drifting recent snow onto lee slopes. Avalanches could be larger where drifted snow is more than about 8 inches thick. Cracking or collapsing in drifted snow is a sign of an unstable slope and an indication to move to lower-angle, wind-sheltered terrain.
