Enduring weaknesses in the snowpack continue to pose a threat to travelers in avalanche country of slab avlanches. Serious avalanche events the past weekend indicate the long lasting nature of these problems. Excellent terrain evaluation skills are essential for safe travel in or near avalanche terrain today.

    Dangerous slabs up to three feet in depth rest on buried layers of weak, faceted snow. These slabs can be easily triggered by riders or skiers venturing onto steep slopes. Some steep slopes may be crossed multiple times before an avalanche is released.
