Additional snowfall and wind loading will make it possible to trigger an avalanche today. Wind slabs will be most hazardous where they overlie weak layers on shady aspects or crusts on sunny aspects. As snowfall continues, there may be some areas that have soft slabs of new snow that may avalanche. Look out for signs of wind-drifted snow or shooting cracks, and opt for lower-angled terrain if you see them.

    Expect to find thick drifts and slabs in exposed terrain. Wind slabs will be most hazardous where they overlie weaker snow. You are most likely to trigger one of these slabs in upper elevations, where they will be the thickest and most broadly distributed. Bear in mind these slabs may be in unusual spots due to shifting winds throughout the recent periods of snowfall. Thick, older drifts may support your weight in some areas, while more recent drifts may be touchy in others today. These drifts are more dangerous where new snow is sitting on older snow from October.

    Several pulses and pauses in snowfall this week may affect how additional snowfall will bond. New snow may break within the new snow, or on the old snow surface. The new snow overnight plus another 6-8” today will create the potential for human-triggered soft slab avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

Significant snowfall and drifting will increase hazard in the backcountry.  With limited observations and untested weak layers across many zones, answering the question of what will tip the bar towards greater instability (and if it's been tipped) is difficult. But we do know this: as snow piles up through the weekend, we'll need to take an increasingly cautious approach to backcountry travel.  Shallow early-season snow conditions still exist in the lower elevations, and about 1.5' of snow is covering the rocks on most mid-elevation slopes before last night's snow.
