Kernpunkte

Wind slabs up to 1' deep may still be reactive in the Seward/ Lost Lake zone today.  These are most likely just below ridgelines and on steep, convex terrain features above 1,000' where northerly winds have redistributed the cold, dry snow from last weekend's storm.  Keep an eye out for shooting cracks or changes in the snow surface, such as a hollow or drum-like feel, in order to identify wind slabs during your travels today.

    Recent Avalanches: There was a skier-triggered avalanche on Mt. Eva near Seward on Tuesday, about 1' deep and 75 to 100' wide. The avalanche was unintentionally triggered at a relatively low elevation on a wind-loaded roll at 1,400'.

    Winds in the Seward/ Lost Lake area were a bit stronger after the weekend snowstorm than what the Summit or Turnagain zones saw.    Unfortunately, most surfaces have been wind-affected with shallow wind slabs forming in the 1' range. These are likely to be on the stubborn side today, but still warrant caution, particularly in steeper terrain near ridgelines and slope convexities at all elevations.  Look for shooting cracks or a sharp change in density at the snow surface to suss out if you're traveling on a wind slab.

    Dry Loose: For skiers, dry, loose (sluffs) avalanches are also likely as cold, clear temps and a lack of wind continue to facet out the surface. These shouldn't be large enough to bury a person, but may be fast-running and need to be 'managed' to avoid getting knocked off your feet in steep terrain today.
