Kernpunkte

Multiple nights of above freezing temperatures along with record setting warmth will continue to create a weak snowpack.  There may be a limited early morning window for travel today before the snowpack becomes wet and deep with wet loose avalanches becoming likely.  Avoid avalanche terrain once the snowpack becomes wet, deep, and unsupportable.

    A weak or very limited refreeze of the snow surface occurred again last night in most areas, making for multiple nights of little to no refreeze of the snowpack.  Rapid warming will occur again early this morning with well above average temperatures expected again along with strong March sunshine.  Deep unsupportable snow was reported yesterday as early as mid morning in several locations.  Aspects that have seen multiple melt freeze cycles (E-SE-S-SW-W aspects) had more supportability than areas with transitional snow (NW-N-NE aspects) which had very little strength left in the snowpack.  As this record setting heat wave continues, snowpack conditions are expected to further deteriorate with more wet loose avalanches occurring.

    There may be a very short window to find supportable snow early this morning.  Signs of unstable wet snow development will include: roller balls, pinwheels, boot top deep snow, and recent wet loose avalanches.  As the snowpack becomes deep and unsupportable, it's time to move off of avalanche terrain onto lower angle slopes with no avalanche terrain above.

Avalanche Discussion

  • Deep, wet, and unsupportable snow was reported as early as mid morning yesterday.  Knee deep boot pen and 1 to 2 foot deep ski pen was also reported on N-NE aspects.
  • Snowmelt has intensified on all aspects and elevations throughout the forecast region.  Most SE-S-SW aspects have exposed bare ground in many areas limiting snow travel options on these aspects.
  • The old facet layer that was buried on Feb 14 still exists on some NW-N-NE aspects. Data and observations indicate that it has gained strength over time.  In some isolated areas-melt water could weaken and potentially cause this weak layer to fail as a wet slab avalanche.  This remains an unlikely, but not impossible scenario with the limited distribution and scope of this weak layer.
