Dynamic spring weather will lead to dynamic avalanche concerns today. Increasing winds out of the northeast will redistribute loose surface snow, creating fresh wind slabs in alpine catchment zones, and the strong April sun may be enough to create loose wet avalanches on solar slopes in sheltered areas. Be on the lookout for changing conditions today, and keep in mind that even a small avalanche can have elevated consequences in exposed or extreme terrain.

    Strong winds out of the northeast will redistribute loose surface snow today, leading to fresh windslab development throughout the day.  Expect the size and distribution of fresh wind slabs to be greater in areas with higher snow totals from yesterday's isolated showers, namely at higher elevations and along the Sierra crest. Blowing snow, recent drifting, hollow drum-like snow surfaces, and shooting cracks in surface snow are all signs that indicate nearby wind deposits. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions. Sheltered terrain with lower slope angles will offer safer riding opportunities.

    Wet loose avalanches may become possible today on steep solar slopes as the strong April sun and rising temperatures impact surface snow. Increasing winds out of the northeast will combat these forces and may be enough to keep surface warming from becoming problematic.  Localized assessments will be crucial for the backcountry enthusiast. Wet and sticky surface snow, increasing boot penetration, and roller balls coming down from cliff bands are warning signs that loose wet avalanches are becoming more likely. Very steep, rocky slopes with direct sun exposure and areas with thin snow cover will be areas of greatest concern. Be cognizant of your exposure to overhead hazards today and be prepared to adjust your plans as conditions change.

Avalanche Discussion

Our spring season thus far has been marked by dynamic and active weather with cold winter-like storms and more loose, soft snow than we may typically expect this time of year. As things settle down today and we start to transition to more quiet weather, it will be important to remain flexible and be ready for a variety of surface conditions and stability concerns. Keep in mind that things can change quickly this time of year, and you should expect a wide variety of conditions depending on region, elevation, aspect, and time of day.  Planning your day with several options will be advantageous, allowing you to adjust to changing conditions.

Beyond stability concerns, there are several other factors to consider. Snow lines are creeping up, and accessing your chosen objective may involve a difficult approach, creek crossings, and areas of dry ground. Surface conditions will be variable, and specialized tools like boot and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be necessary, depending on where you wish to travel. Temporal considerations are becoming more important as the days get longer. Planning for an early start and an early exit from the backcountry is a good idea if your trip plan includes exposure to avalanche terrain.
