Kernpunkte

Look out for isolated, unstable wind slabs near ridgetops, cliffs and in steep couloirs.  Continue to evaluate these terrain features for signs of instability. Triggering an avalanche in terrain unaffected by wind is unlikely.

    Night before last wind gusts from the north-northwest reached 45mph and moved very light density snow around.  You'll find wind slabs and signs of scouring in exposed areas at upper eevations as well as in chokes and aprons in steep gullies. These slabs are likely to be stubborn but may be up to a foot and a half thick  in some places. 

    A chart of reported avalanches occuring in the past week in the Tetons with the same avalanche shown twice. The trend is clear. 

Avalanche Discussion

The weak layers buried in mid and late December are preserved in the snowpack on northerly aspects. These layers appear to be dormant at this time in most locations. Unstable snow could potentially be found on isolated terrain features but would take a large trigger or exceptionally bad luck to find and trigger.  In other forecast zones these old layers remain a more widespread concern.
