Kernpunkte

Avalanches will be unlikely in the majority of terrain today. That will change as the day progresses, with snow and wind beginning this morning. By the end of the day it will be possible to trigger avalanches less than a foot deep in steep wind loaded terrain.

    Snowfall and wind will increase in intensity throughout the day. Slabs will be forming as the day progresses and be most sensitive in upper elevation starting zones late in the day. Slab depths may approach a foot by day's end and be most sensitive in steep upper elevation terrain. If you find yourself out in the mountains close to sunset, be on the lookout for shooting cracks and collapsing. Avoid steep terrain when these signs are present.

    Weak layers sitting 1-3 feet below dense slabs remain as an outlier threat. A natural avalanche cycle occurred over a week ago on these layers and for the time being appear to be dormant. This remains a low likelihood/high consequence situation. For the time being give yourself a wide margin around steep terrain. Minimize your exposure by riding one at a time and utilizing true islands of safety when traveling in steep terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

The snowpack in the Salt and Wyoming ranges has gone through a period of strengthening over the last week. The early season brought an extended period of dry and cool conditions which promoted weak layer development. Mid December brought significant snowfall with a natural avalanche cycle as a result. The last reported avalanche in this zone occurred on Dec 20th, six days ago. Following that cycle, temperatures were unseasonably warm for several days. In the short term this weakened the snow surface. In the long term, it helped to strengthen the snowpack as the various layers adjusted to each other and temperatures dipped back down.

Light intermittent snowfall over the last week has been gradual enough to allow the snowpack to adjust. This has resulted in a decline in avalanche activity. Expect all of that to change in the coming days, as significant snow, wind and occasional rises in temperature place stress and rapid change on the underlying layers.
