Avalanche terrain should be evaluated carefully today. Natural avalanches are possible; human triggered avalanches likely.  Cold temps, low density new snow and moderate westerly wind is the vibe. There is plenty of low angle terrain to have fun in out there. The ingredients for avalanches are present -- don't be the chef.

    Slopes steeper than 35 degrees should be approached with caution today. The past few days delivered 10–15 inches of new snow and moderate westerly winds. Precipitation is tapering off, but light snowfall and wind transport will keep loading the snowpack. Storm‑snow instability may appear as slabs or loose, dry sluffs, with wind‑drifted slabs certain in exposed terrain near and above treeline. Increasing west to northwest winds have plenty of low‑density snow to move around. Cold temperatures will slow settlement and stabilization.

Avalanche Discussion

  • Over the past three days near treeline on Mount Shasta, new snow amounts measure 10-15 inches (.59 SWE), with a total snow depth of 90 inches
  • Predominant wind direction has been out of the west, averaging 12 mi/hr with gusts to 40 mi/hr
  • Recent natural avalanches (Feb 16 and Feb 17) and a handful of red flags around the forecast area highlight ongoing instability. Yesterdays observations from Castle Lake here
  • Up on Mount Shasta, visibility was tough. Below and near treeline, small rollovers could produce loose dry sluffs. In windy terrain, soft storm slabs and cornices were touchy on test slopes
  • Weak layers in the snowpack include graupel identified within the Feb. 14 - 16 storm. Sugary, faceted snow exists in many areas beneath a crust. With additional loading, especially this weekend, the strength of the crust may be tested, especially on the shadier aspects where the crust is thinnest
  • Temperatures are cold, plenty of low density snow is available for wind transport and in general, the snowpack has yet to settle out. An assessment mindset is essential right now. We’re reaching the point where solid knowledge, skills, and ability are essential for safe backcountry travel. Deep snow and very cold temperatures persist. Watch out for those tree wells
  • Remember, it's all about recognizing avalanche terrain. You can't get caught in an avalanche if you're not in avalanche terrain. A slope shade map is golden for identifying avalanche prone slopes
  • If the sun makes an appearance, snow surfaces on steep (>35 degrees) solar-facing terrain may begin to lose cohesion. If you see or can trigger rollerballs or pinwheels, consider moving to a different aspect or lower angle slope. Cold, dry snow can be susceptible to subtle changes in solar input
  • Both the Everitt Memorial Highway and Castle Lake roads are open and plowed. Sand Flat Winter XC-Ski Trails are open and in pristine condition. Pilgrim Creek and Deer Mountain Snomobile Parks are open. Mt Shasta Nordic Center and Ski Park are also open.
