Human triggered avalanches will be possible today as recent snow forms fresh wind slabs and adds stress to buried weak layers throughout the snowpack. Look for obvious signs of instability such as cracking, stiffened surfaces and drifts to identify wind slabs. Use careful assessment of terrain on shallow, wind loaded and steep slopes.

    Fresh wind slabs will continually form as this storm cycle brings more moisture and sustained winds. Slab depths range will be up to 12 inches loading primarily leeward terrain from moderate to strong SW winds with high ranges of 25-35 mph.     Weak layers are buried throughout the entire snowpack consisting of weak facets and crusts. The primary concern is the new/old snow interface buried Feb 18th. These soft and hard slabs range from 1-2 feet across all elevation and aspects. Deeper weak layers buried 2-3 feet also remain a concern due to the poor structure. Increased loading of new snow could increased reactivity of these layers. Terrain with an increased likelihood of triggering one of these avalanches includes:

    • Shallow snowpack: Weaker buried layers of snow .
    • Wind-affected: Terrain where wind has formed firm, cohesive slabs of snow. 
    • Steep: Over 35° slopes.

The storm cycle continues as consistent snowfall and strong wind gradually increases avalanche danger. Wind slabs will be the most likely problem you will encounter in the mountains today in exposed terrain as they grow in size and reactivity throughout the day. The tougher problem to think about are those buried weak layers, primarily the Feb 18th layer that saw increased reactivity this last week as it woke up during temperature increases. Deeper weak layers should also be on your mind as the poor overall snowpack structure becomes stressed by loading of new snow and wind slab development. Due to the high uncertainty in how all these layers will react to loading of new snow, reassess the terrain you have been riding all season. That unsuspected terrain may cause trouble during these changing conditions. Avoid steep, consequential slopes in the coming days as we assess the growing complexity of the snowpack.
