On Thursday, riders in the Ahtanum Meadows area near Darland Moutain triggered two wind slab avalanches. Thankfully, the avalanches were small, and no one was caught, carried, or injured. These slabs formed over weak snow surfaces and can take longer than average to heal. To avoid triggering a wind slab, stick to slopes less than 30 degrees or travel on scoured ridgelines or slopes at mid and upper elevations. If you see cracks shooting away from you, the snowpack feels hollow or collapses beneath you, the snow is unstable, and you should steer clear of steep terrain.
Steep slopes below corniced ridgelines are a prime location for wind slabs. In addition, easterly winds formed slabs in unusual patterns, and you're also likely to find significant drifting mid-slope with slabs on steep convexities and cross-loaded gullies. Use visual clues like textured surfaces, cornices, and drifts around rocks and trees to point you to likely wind slab locations.

These drifts are good clues that wind slabs are present in the area, even at lower elevations.
