Kernpunkte

While large avalanches are unlikely, the chance of small wet avalanches will increase during the day. These slides can release on their own or be triggered. They are most likely on sun-drenched upper elevation slopes that are sheltered from the wind.

    Natural and human triggered, wet loose avalanches could release on steep, sunny slopes. While these slides should be small, they could be large enough to knock you over or even bury a person in a terrain trap.

    Fortunately, these avalanches are fairly predictable and manageable. The threat of wet avalanches will follow the sun around the compass: E-SE aspects first thing this morning, S facing terrain before noon, and SW-W aspects in the afternoon and evening. Rocky terrain that is shelted from the wind will heat up quickly. At upper elevations, there is more recent snowfall—"ammunition" for wet avalanches. Sizeable avalanches are less likely where you can see the dust layer on the surface.

    Rollerballs and a slushy snow surface are clues that the snow is heating up, and wet avalanches may soon follow. If you're playing on or under alpine slopes on the southern half of the compass, plan for an early exit and avoid lingering under big avalanche paths.

Avalanche Discussion

SAC staff, local professionals, and observers have triggered and observed small wet avalanches in several mountain ranges in recent days. All of these slides involved the snow that fell in the past week. Today, a weak overnight freeze and unseasonably warm, sunny weather will drive the threat of wet loose avalanche activity. In addition to the wet snow concerns, a couple other things are worth mentioning:

  • Wind Slabs: In shady alpine terrain, you may find sensitive pockets of wind-drifted snow. A local professional spotted a small avalanche that appeared to be triggered by a snowmobiler on an obviously wind-loaded slope in the Pioneer Mtns. 
  • Cornices: Many large cornices are sagging or overhanging. Given the warm weather, cornices deserve respect. Give them a wide berth.
