Human-triggered loose snow avalanches are possible on very steep slopes receiving direct sun. These slides are most likely in wind-sheltered terrain during the heat of the day. Triggering small avalanches of recent wind-drifted snow also remains possible at upper elevations. Exercise caution on slopes with recent drifting or snow that is starting to warm, particularly if entering consequential terrain, and continue to give cornices a wide berth.

    Loose snow avalanches are possible during the heat of the day. They often originate near warm cliff bands and rocks on very steep slopes that directly face the sun. They begin at a point and fan out to collect debris as they move downslope. They are commonly small but can really pack a punch in large or confined terrain.

    Watch for obvious signs that the warm sun is wetting the surface of the snow. Thinly covered rocks and cliffs are the first areas to shed. Small roller balls or pinwheels of moist snow can be an early warning that loose snow slides may follow. Pay attention to what's above you. You can largely avoid this problem by sticking to colder, shaded aspects or lower-angle terrain.

    Expect to find wind slabs at middle and upper elevations. Some of these wind slabs could be drifted ~12 inches or more. Many of them formed above icy melt-freeze crusts, some of which will be sensitive to your weight.

A QUICK SEASON RECAPAt this point in the season, some of us ask ourselves, "Where did the winter go?" while others ask, "Where is it dry enough to bike?" November is full of possibilities for the winter ahead; before we know it, it's over. If you want a quick trip down memory lane, read on.

This winter was divided into two very distinct halves. Weather remained primarily quiet while areas to our north and south—namely, Colorado and Montana—already had a stout snowpack by December. With a few small storms, things were looking promising. Things dried out considerably in January, creating a thick layer of near-surface facets, which were quickly buried by bigger, wet storms and remained relatively quiet. The second half of winter provided well. February was the month of no sun, with trickling storms creating a relatively deep and stable snowpack, and catching us up to average on depths. Right now, we're sitting at around 88-99 percent of average for snow-water equivalent for the year.  Of 127 issued forecasts, we averaged around 39 days of High & Considerable ratings in the Tetons, 44 in the Salt and Wyoming, 43 in the Snake, and 33 at Togwotee Pass, aligning with where areas saw greater snowfall during large storm cycles. Overall, a greater percentage of frequent, but small (less than D2) avalanches were noted in the Tetons, Snake, and Salt & Wyoming this season vs last. Notably, weak snow near the base of the snowpack at Togwotee Pass (par for the course) contributed to two very large human-triggered avalanches over the season, with the area harboring a low-probability but high-consequence scenario. 

Public observations accounted for 358 of 661 total observations. More data = more accurate forecasts and better information for you & your community to have a safe winter. THANK YOU!

Currently, keep in mind that it's still wintery in the alpine, and the transition to new snow forming wet snow problems will be fast. For a majority of the terrain in the forecast area, the snowpack is generally stable, and avalanches are unlikely. Use normal backcountry caution—make a plan before heading out, carry the appropriate avalanche safety equipment, and remain alert for unexpected conditions.
