Kernpunkte

The likelihood of triggering a persistent slab in the middle of the snowpack is low but has significant destructive potential if triggered.  Upper-elevation terrain has some wind slabs that should be stabilizing.

Make sure everyone in your group is wearing a beacon and carrying a shovel and probe on their back.

    Triggering a weak layer of Buried surface hoar that now lies in the middle of the snowpack, is getting hard to trigger, and becoming less likely to propagate. Natural and human-triggered avalanches were observed and reported a week ago on this layer of buried surface hoar that formed around December 18th. Our test results and observations around the advisory area have been pointing towards strengthening.

    Even though this layer is becoming less likely to trigger, the destructive potential if triggered could be serious given the potential amount of snow that could come down on you. The most likely areas that you could trigger this layer are places that are protected from the wind where the feathers stayed intact, in steep terrain, rocky areas, and places where the snowpack is shallow.

    Last Wednesday we got a report of this small human-triggered avalanche that luckily did not hurt anyone.

    Winds have calmed and temps during the day are climbing. Time and temps have likely helped stabilize wind slabs that formed over the weekend. While the likelyhood of triggering a wind slab is fading, It is still good to be prepared for a small wind slab that could send you off course and into rocks or over a cliff. The slabs may not have gotten a chance to bond well to our rain crust that formed just after Christmas.  Leeward terrain or the Northern end of the compass is the most likely place to hold lingering wind slabs.

Ok so here we are in Moderate Avalanche danger what does that mean? It means that the chances of triggering an avalanche are low, but the consequences could be high. Half of the snowpack could come down if our mid-pack persistent weak layer fails. 

The best thing you can do is make sure you are following the basic protocols of being in avalanche terrain: if you are on slopes steeper than 30 degrees use the best travel protocols that you can like watching your partners from a safe spot, only putting one person at a time on a slope, wearing an avalanche transceiver on your body and carrying a shovel and probe on your back. Knowing how to use your beacon, and making sure that your partners know how to use their beacon is extra important too.
