As daytime warming occurs, surface snow will transition from dry to wet on slopes getting direct sun. Move to shaded aspects before rollerballs and wet loose avalanches begin tumbling down from rocky or vegetated areas. Assess recently wind-loaded slopes for shooting cracks or collapsing before heading into steep terrain.

    Sunny skies will bring temperatures above freezing to about 10,500 feet today. Up to a foot of cold, low-density snow will transition and become wet as daytime warming occurs. Under the recent snow, hard crusts will act as good sliding surfaces for wet snow avalanches. 

    Rollerballs and pinwheels are obvious precursors of Wet Loose avalanches. Wet Loose avalanches can entrain heavy snow that is difficult to manage or escape from. With wind slabs lingering on all aspects, Wet Loose avalanches can also trigger larger slabs that break into deeper snow layers. The best way to manage Wet Loose avalanches is to travel when the snow surface is colder. Time your trips to avoid crossing on or under very steep slopes in the heat of the day.

    Shifting winds over the past 24 hours have redistributed plenty of soft snow onto leeward slopes. Forecasters changed plans after triggering several wind slabs in the June area yesterday. Consequential slab avalanches remain a concern on many aspects today. 

    The most likely places to trigger wind slabs will be the leeward sides of ridgelines, confined alpine couloirs, and cross-loaded gullies. Recent avalanches and shooting cracks in stiffer, textured surface snow means you’ve found the problem. Stick to lower-angled slopes and sheltered terrain to limit your exposure.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday, forecasters found sensitive wind slabs near treeline in the June Lake Backcountry. Many small dry loose avalanches were triggered, or ran naturally on all aspects over the past 48 hours.

Cold temperatures, clouds, and wind have kept new and recent snow dry in most parts of the forecast area. Up to a foot of recent storm snow sits atop melt-freeze crusts in most places. Under that crust are either rounding grains or sugary facets. In isolated areas, it rests directly on weak facets.

Extremely limited and unreliable wind data is a significant source of uncertainty in our forecast area. Assess for wind slab distribution and sensitivity throughout your tour. 

We are more certain that daytime warming will cause dry snow to become wet and heat the surface of wind slabs. Your best move is to transition to shady aspects with little exposure to steep, sunny slopes overhead.
