Avalanche Activity

High altitudes: fresh snowdrifts. Lower down: naturally triggered avalanches due to rain and higher temperatures

Avalanche danger at all altitudes is moderate. Above 1800 m the snowdrift problem prevails. On east-facing slopes and in general in wind-loaded terrain, 1 person can trigger a slab avalanche. Windblown exposed surfaces are often hard and icy, acute danger of falling. Below 1800 m in all aspects, small-to-medium naturally triggered avalanches can be expected which can place exposed transportation routes at risk. In addition, isolated gliding snow activity and glide-snow avalanches can’t be excluded. Poor visibility and stormy conditions make assessment of avalanche danger on-site far more difficult.

Snowpack Structure

Above 1800 m in extended east-facing terrain, the snowdrifts lie deposited atop an unfavorable base which can serve as a weak layer. At lower altitudes the fresh snow can be destabilized by rainfall and warmth. . The melt-freeze encrusted fundament is stable.

Weather Forecast

On Tuesday night a warm front will pass through, brining storm-strength W/NW winds throughout Styria. The snowfall level will ascend to over 2000 m. In Northern Alpls up to 10 cm of fresh snow is expected, rainfall lower down. South of the Niedere Tauern, mostly dry and dispersed clouds in the afternoon. At 2000 m: +1 to +2 degrees.In evening the snowfall level will drop from the north, snowfall will set in.

Tendency

On Thursday, cooler but still stormy. Avalanche danger levels will increase (snowdrift problem at high altitudes).
