In high Alpine regions a considerable avalanche danger will be encountered in some regions.

The new snow of the last three days represents the main danger. Dry avalanches can in some cases be released by a single winter sport participant. In particular on north facing slopes these can release the weakly bonded old snow as well and reach large size in isolated cases. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality.

On very steep sunny slopes moist snow slides are possible. Below approximately 2400 m individual wet and gliding avalanches are possible, in particular medium-sized ones.

Snowpack Beneath the fresh fallen snow of recent days the old snow cover on north-facing slopes below approximately 2700 m, in the other aspects up to over 3000 m, is thoroughly wet. In the southern part of the Valais and in Grisons more than anywhere else, as well as from place to place in the other regions of Switzerland, there are still pronounced weakened layers evident deeply embedded inside the snow cover. As temperatures have dropped, however, the activity of wet-snow avalanches has diminished. At heightened altitudes, dry-snow avalanches can be triggered from the fresh snow and freshly generated snowdrifts more than anywhere else. In isolated cases these releases can sweep away the entire snow cover and grow to large size. Observed weather review Friday, 12.05.2023 Skies were predominantly overcast accompanied by sunny intervals. There was intermittent precipitation registered. The snowfall level lay at approximately 1800 m. Fresh snow There was 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow registered above 2500 m. Temperature The zero-degree level at midday lay at 2300 m. Wind Winds in the high alpine regions were blowing intermittently at moderate strength from northerly directions, in the other regions winds were predominantly light. Weather forecast through Saturday, 13.05.2023 Skies are expected to be predominantly overcast. Particularly in the inneralpine and the southern regions, bright intervals will be possible. Above 2000 to 2200 m, intermittent snowfall is anticipated. Fresh snow Above 2500 m, 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow is expected over widespread areas, as much as 15 cm in the southern regions. Temperature The zero-degree level will lie at approximately 2400 m. Wind In the high alpine regions, winds will be blowing intermittently at moderate strength, elsewhere blowing predominantly at light strength. Outlook through Monday, 15.05.2023 Skies are expected to be heavily overcast for the most part, accompanied by bright intervals particularly in the inneralpine and the southern regions. Intermittent precipitation is anticipated. On both days, 5 to 10 cm of fresh fallen snow is possible in the high alpine regions, more from place to place. Both the amounts of precipitation and its distribution are still quite uncertain for Monday. In the high alpine regions more than anywhere else, dry-snow avalanches can still be triggered by persons. In case of bright intervals, moist slides can be expected to release from the fresh fallen snow at high and high alpine altitudes.
