Avalanche Danger is CONSIDERABLE as 4-7”+ of new snow falls this morning and strong winds build fresh sensitive wind slabs. Human triggered avalanches will be likely and natural avalanches possible in wind loaded terrain. The many obstacles present with our shallow snowpack could make even a small slide consequential.

    Snowfall began around 3am this morning, with rates up to 1-2” per hour, and is expected to taper off after 10am.  Strong west to southwest winds blowing at ideal speeds to transport and deposit snow into dangerous wind slabs will continue even after the snowfall stops this afternoon. Watch for areas of deeper denser wind deposited snow on the leeward side of ridgelines, sidewalls of gullies and cross-slope deposition areas especially on east to north facing terrain.  Use clues such as blowing snow and cornice formation to help you avoid being on or under a steep slope with a fresh dangerous wind slab. The thin underlying snowpack (where it exists!) is a mixture of slick crusts and loose sugary facets, making for sensitive avalanche triggering conditions.

    In sheltered areas protected from the wind where new snowfall amounts reach the higher end, triggering small soft storm slab avalanches may be possible where old snow exists under the new.  Steep northeast to north to west facing slopes above 9000’ are the greatest concern.  Loose dry sloughing in these areas may occur as well.   

Avalanche Discussion

Our long dry-spell is finally coming to an end.  A solid month has passed since our last real snowfall on November 9th. Most SE-S-SW facing slopes were bare before today, and the thin snowpack on shaded aspects has been weakening with layers of sugary facet development especially near the surface. These weak facets will exacerbate the fairly obvious surface instabilities inherent with today’s loading, making it harder for the new snow to bond with the old.  Expect sensitive conditions today. Our shallow snowpack with a plethora of exposed or just barely under the surface rocks, logs and stumps present its own set of hazards.
