Snowpack

The sometimes strong northerly winds will transport the snow, which is still loose on shady slopes and close to the surface, creating wind slabs that are prone to triggering, especially in the south.

The old snowpack is quite favourable in the north. In southern Valais and Grisons, it is faceted and is prone to triggering in places. In Ticino, the weak layers in the old snowpack are now so heavily covered that only isolated avalanches can be triggered in the old snowpack.

The snowpack is water-saturated on southern slopes up into high Alpine regions, as well as on western and eastern slopes below approximately 2000 to 2200 m. On northern slopes moistening is only superficial. With reduced outgoing longwave radiation during the night and the daytime consequences of warming and solar radiation, wet and gliding avalanches are still possible.

Weather forecast to Thursday

During the night into Thursday, there will still be little precipitation in the north and east. The snowfall level will be around 1400 m. During the day, there will be stratus-like clouds in the north at first, then it will be partly sunny as the day progresses. It will be mostly sunny in Valais, on the southern flank of the Alps and in the Engadine.

Fresh snow

Northern flank of the Alps from the Bernese Alps to Liechtenstein and Grisons: a few centimetres.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between -1 °C in the north and +3 °C in the south.

Wind

• Moderate northeasterly to easterly winds, strong at times at high altitudes.
• Moderate northerly foehn wind in the south.

Weather review for Wednesday

In the north and east, it was very cloudy and some precipitation fell in some regions, falling as snow above approximately 1600 m. In Valais and the Engadine it was partly sunny, while it was mostly sunny on the southern flanks of the Alps, with cumulus clouds developing as the day progressed.

Fresh snow

Above approximately 2000 m: central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps up to 10 cm, otherwise a few centimetres in some localities.

At midday at 2000 m, between -1 °C in the north and +3 °C in the south.

Wind

Light to moderate from north to northeast.

In the mountains, it will be mostly sunny with cumulus clouds developing as the day progresses. Winds will be light to moderate and will shift to the northwest.

The risk of dry avalanches will slowly decrease. Wet and gliding avalanches are to be expected as the day progresses. Touring and off-piste descents should be completed in good time.

Saturday

In the north, it will be very cloudy with persistent precipitation. The snowfall level will drop from 1500 to 1000 m. On the northern flank of the Alps, 20 to 30 cm of snow is expected to fall, with less in Valais and Grisons. In the south, it will be dry and partly sunny. The northerly wind will become increasingly strong as the day progresses.

The danger of dry avalanches will increase, significantly so on the northern flank of the Alps. In the south, wet and gliding avalanches are again to be expected as the day progresses. In the north, the danger of wet and gliding avalanches will decrease slightly.
