Avalanche Activity

GC for 24.2 Unstable windslab forming above 800m on NW, to SE aspects. Greatest on NE and E. Cornices fragile. AV Haz Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Poorly bonded windslab will continue to develop on North-West through North to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Greatest accumulations will be on North-East and East aspects in wind sheltered locations. Where these deposits gain depth, stability will be poor. Areas most affected will be gully tops, corrie rims, scarp slopes and crag aprons. Fragile cornices will develop above these aspects. Wind scoured slopes will become icy and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Throughout the period there will be snow showers to glen level. The winds initially will be Gale force South-Westerly, moderating slightly during the night, to Strong South-Westerly during the day. The freezing level will be around 200 metres rising very slowly during the day to 400 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Strong to gale force Westerly winds throughout today, with frequent very heavy showers. Initially these showers as snow on only the highest summits, but snow level dropped during the day to around 600 metres. The freezing level was at summit levels before dropping to 400 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The existing snowpack, is moist and consolidating in the falling temperatures. Fresh, moderately bonded windslab is developing on North-East to South-East aspects above 850 metres in wind sheltered locations. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
