Avalanche Activity

The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs represent the main danger.

Wind slabs can in some places be released by a single winter sport participant and reach medium size. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation this applies especially above approximately 2200 m, in particular. In particular transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack are unfavourable. Avalanches can additionally in isolated cases be released in near-ground layers, in particular by large additional loads.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Sunday in all altitude zones. In particular in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Over a wide area various wind slab layers are lying on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. Individual weak layers exist deep in the snowpack in particular in shady places that are protected from the wind.
