Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and strong wind the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses. Gradual increase in avalanche danger above approximately 2500 m.

The fresh snow as well as the mostly small wind slabs will become increasingly prone to triggering. New snow and wind slabs can to an increasing extent be released, even by a single winter sport participant. This applies in particular in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation. Dry slab avalanches are the main danger. Some mostly small natural avalanches are possible. In very isolated cases avalanches can also be released in near-ground layers reach large size in isolated cases in particular on steep north, east and southeast facing slopes.

Snowpack Structure

5 to 10 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall. Strong wind. The old snowpack is fairly homogeneous and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. This applies in particular on sunny slopes below approximately 2600 m. Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack at intermediate and high altitudes. In all aspects at intermediate altitudes less snow than usual is lying.
