Spring-like avalanche problems accompany spring-like weather. Firm, frozen, or cold snow in the morning will transition to warm and sticky surface snow that can produce rollerballs and wet avalanches. Anticipate this transition and navigate away from longer open slopes above treeline where natural or human-triggered will be large to cause harm.

    Warm temperatures and full sunshine on Thursday will produce wet loose avalanches on all aspects. Avalanches may be up to a foot deep above treeline, but should be 2-6" deep near and below treeline. You might find a crust to start the day on Thursday. Expect that crust to quickly break down on aspects receiving direct sunshine while slopes will warm more slowly on shaded aspects. Rollerballs indicate the transition of surface snow as it moistens. Loose avalanches quickly follow. They may be triggered by humans or naturally occurring.  Move off of and out from under large sun-warmed slopes steeper than 35 degrees. If you see signs of sticky, wet snow or rollerball activity, choose lower-angle slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

The last major storm event ended on February 27th within this storm snow, you can still find a distinct freezing rain crust buried 2/22. Since then, a period of dry and mild weather created a supportable crust on most aspects except for the above treeline northerly aspects. Unsettled, cold weather since March 5th has brought minor accumulations each day, adding up to about 3-5" of low-density snow.

The spring-like convective pattern will transition to a spring-like high-pressure pattern with full sunshine and warmer temperatures on Thursday. Temperatures were warm enough with just enough sunshine on Wednesday to transition from dry to wet avalanche problems. The moistening upper snowpack created the conditions for rider-triggered wet loose avalanches on steep slopes. MHM pro patrol found human-triggered avalanches that were 2-6" deep above the most recent crust near and below treeline, extending up to 1 ft deep above treeline.

You may still be able to find and trigger an old and stubborn wind slab on steep, northerly slopes above treeline. However, we think that mild temperatures and lack of additional snow loading has given most wind slabs sufficient time to heal.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
