Even though triggering an avalanche is more difficult, it is still possible. Watch out for areas with a shallow snowpack where old weak snow remains closer to the surface. Avalanches in these areas could be large and may be remotely triggered. Small slabs of drifted snow may also exist near ridgelines. MODERATE avalanche danger will exist at all elevations.

    The chances of triggering a persistent slab avalanche continue to decrease as the weak layers buried in the snowpack gain strength. Unfortunately, persistent weak layers do not gain strength uniformly across all areas. Most data from places with a deeper snowpack indicates significant snowpack consolidation and signs of instability continue to grow more sporadic. On the other hand, areas where a shallow snowpack exists still exhibit worrisome signs of instability like whumpfs, shooting cracks, and unstable snowpit tests. Specific areas with reports of a shallow unstable snowpack include the Carson Pass and Ebbetts Pass areas as well as lower elevation areas in other parts of the forecast region. Triggering a persistent slab avalanche may remain possible where the weak layer sits closer to the surface. A person hitting just the right spot (trigger point) on a slope or larger triggers like multiple people on a slope could also be problematic.  

    Persistent slabs behave in unpredictable ways like breaking on a slope that already has lots of tracks on it. They also can have serious consequences since they tend to propagate far and wide across slopes. This uncertain, high-consequence, low-probability problem still warrants caution. Traveling on terrain less steep than 30 degrees not connected to steeper slopes or terrain without the weak layer can provide fun recreation opportunities with significantly higher safety margins. Be patient, the snowpack conditions will improve, and bigger, steeper terrain will still be here after the persistent slab problem goes away.

    Continued blowing snow yesterday and last night may have formed small slabs of drifted snow on leeward aspects (NW-N-NE-E-SE) near ridgelines. These small wind slabs will exist on top of older wind slabs formed during Monday's storm. In most areas, the likelihood of triggering a wind slab avalanche has decreased. However, they may still be possible today in heavily wind loaded areas or in complex or extreme terrain like unsupported slopes or wind-loaded couloirs.

    Look for blowing snow, new cornice development, and wind pillows as clues to where wind slabs may exist.  

Avalanche Discussion

*  Observers reported whumpfing, cracking, and unstable snowpack test results on Pickett Peak (east of Carson Pass) yesterday on the Dec 11 facet layer.  Noticeable vertical drops accompanied the weak layer collapse in this area. A shallow weak snowpack still exists in this area.

* Farther north on Mt. Judah, Castle Peak, and Andesite Ridge (Donner Summit area), observers reported a deeper snowpack with few signs of instability. In these areas, snowpit tests targeting the Dec 11 facets showed strength gains in the old weak layer and indicated that it can support the snow above it. Snowpit data from Incline Lake Peak (Mt. Rose backcountry) showed similar results. 

* Stiff wind drifted snow existed on leeward aspects on Mt. Judah and Castle Peak, but only minor small cracks resulted from hard ski kicks or small cornice pieces dropped onto wind-loaded test slopes yesterday. Continued wind transport and blowing snow were reported along the ridgelines in both of these areas as well as in the Incline Lake Peak area yesterday.
