Kernpunkte

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist on Friday as temperatures warm and it rains. Wet snow avalanches will occur at mid to lower elevations whereas you will find dry snow avalanche problems up high.  Stick to slopes less than 35 degrees during this period of warm wet weather.

Wet loose avalanches will happen on Friday. It is possible that these will occur naturally, and it is likely that you could trigger them if you venture onto steep slopes. Observe the snow surface as you travel, determining how deep the moisture is getting in the snow.  These avalanches are most likely to occur in steep, rocky areas.  Watch for rollerballs as indicators of the snow surface losing its strength. If you see these signs stay off slopes steeper than 35 degrees where these avalanches could be a problem.

Expect to see wet loose avalanches like these on Friday.

Natural and human triggered storm slab avalanches will occur at upper elevations on Friday. Observations of numerous storm slab avalanches, both natural and human triggered were reported in the last four days in nearby zones.  Those conditions are similar to what we are seeing in the West Central zone. More snowfall and wind will keep this avalanche problem elevated. Expect slabs to increase in size as snowfall continues. Wind will also affect the snow, redistributing it into even thicker slabs on leeward slopes. Stay off slopes steeper than 35 degrees while the storm continues.

You could trigger a slab avalanche at higher elevations on Friday.

Avalanche Discussion

What better way to  bring in the New Year than with continued stormy weather! Friday you will find many bullseye avalanche clues the moment you step out the door: new snow (or rain), wind, and recent warming. This is a day to play it safe and stick to lower angle terrain. Have a happy New Year!
