Kernpunkte

Most terrain has a MODERATE avalanche danger today. Upper elevation terrain where the wind has been drifting snow has a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger. The danger is most pronounced on the east side of the Skyline Drive in areas that received the most new snow like Ferron Canyon.

USE CAUTION! Things are tricky right now because we have lots of weak snow around but we're only adding small amounts of new snow on top of it making it difficult to know when it will become really dangerous.

Here's what I know. There is plenty of very weak pre-existing snow in our pack. We are slowly starting to add new snow layers on top of the weak snow.

Here's what I don't know. When will it get really dangerous. With only small amounts of new snow at a time, it is difficult to say when the old weak snow has had enough and can't take any more.

The strategy is to be on high alert after each snow storm. Look for clues like recent avalanches, "whoomping" of the snowpack and shooting cracks. Once we reach the tipping point, it should be fairly obvious. Until then, things will remain tricky.

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions: The Skyline received a decent shot of snow overnight with averages in the 3 to 5 inch range. Due to the southeast flow, the east side of the range received the most snow. Ferron Canyon was the big winner with 10" of new snow. Overnight temperatures were in the single digits to low teens. The southeast wind had some stronger gusts early on and stayed in the moderate speed range over in the early morning.

Mountain Weather:

We'll see clouds and light snowfall without much accumulation this morning. Temperatures aren't going to warm much. Highs will be in the mid teens. The wind will shift around to the southwest and will be moderate in speed today. Weather remains unsettled through the end of the week with chances for snow. We should see a few inches again on Wednesday.
