Unsettled weather will arrive early Monday morning with snowfall and strong winds forecasted to continue for much of the day. Expect avalanches in wind drifted areas of new snow on slopes steeper than 35 degrees.  Look for and avoid slopes of wind drifted snow in your travels on Monday.

    New snow and wind will deposit snow into pillows and drifts.  These slabs  will be deeper and more reactive on north and east slopes but can occur on all aspects due to the strength of the wind.  Watch for signs of instability such as shooting cracks, collapsing or whumphing, or increasing stiffness in the snow. Cornices will be developing.  Steer clear of them and any steep slopes beneath where wind will be depositing snow.  Poor visibility on Monday will require using extra care to avoid travelling on or below suspect slopes 35 degrees or steeper.

Avalanche Discussion

 Avalanches are most likely to occur Monday during and immediately after it snows. As snow totals grow, expect the avalanche danger to increase. At upper elevations, stronger winds may create larger and easier to trigger avalanches. 

 Consider the November 30 old snow surface as the storm arrives.  Sunny aspects were wet in the last few days and I suspect this surface will have refrozen making an excellent sliding surface for the incoming snow. 

 Be aware that early season conditions still exist. Watch for hidden logs, rocks, and variable snow conditions, especially at lower elevations.

 During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
