Kernpunkte

MODERATE avalanche danger exists above treeline today while LOW danger exists near and below treeline. Due to shifting winds, problematic wind slabs may be residing on all aspects today ranging in size and sensitivity from small and sensitive to larger and more stubborn. Human-triggered avalanches remain possible.  Evaluate snow and terrain carefully and identify features of concern.

    Field observations reported surprisingly light wind speeds throughout the day yesterday even on ridgetops. Our current NW flow will continue today, and winds are expected to increase slightly. Much of our alpine snowpack was ravaged by extreme winds last Monday leaving very little transportable snow in exposed terrain. This may limit the potential for fresh wind slab development however, as our current northwest winds increase in speed today, fresh wind deposits may accumulate in isolated areas on easterly and southerly terrain. Lingering wind slabs on northerly and easterly terrain have the potential to be large and may still be reactive to human triggers.  Exposed areas and leeward catchment zones near and above treeline deserve elevated caution. Large drifts, recent cornice growth, and uneven snow surfaces are all clues that indicate nearby wind deposits. Do your own localized assessments and be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions.

Avalanche Discussion

Variable and challenging surface conditions have been hazardous for most of the season and that holds true yet again here on the Eastside. Field observations report just about every surface condition imaginable. Mondays warm-up left lower elevations with a wide variety of breakable melt-freeze crusts and our recent extreme winds took their toll in more exposed areas stripping much of the alpine and leaving behind an assortment of Sastrugi and wind textured edge-able snow, hard, slick, wind packed slopes, and breakable windboard. There are of course also areas of soft snow residing out there, but they are getting harder to find.  Ski or boot crampons and/or an ice ax may be beneficial tools today depending on your chosen destination.
