  South to Southwesterly winds picked up yesterday and blew through the night and look to continue throughout the day. Snow accumulation started to pick up in the morning hours above 9000ft (3” as of 6am) and look to be centered in the Mammoth area. Northerly-Easterly aspects in the upper to middle elevations will be of most concern today for potential fresh Wind Slab. Temperatures were relatively warm overnight and have continued to hover just below freezing around 9000ft level which will contribute to some good bonding of the new snow and old snow surfaces, but be on the lookout today for freshly loaded areas. Lower elevations should remain warm with above freezing temperatures and damp conditions which may lend itself to more hazard concerning loose wet avalanche potential and sticky snow. Be on the lookout today for recent avalanche activity, actively transporting snow, and sensitive surface conditions under foot such as shooting cracks and collapsing of the snowpack.  Identify fat looking deposits of new snow especially adjacent to ridgeline and in areas of complex terrain conducive to capturing windblown snow.

  Warm temperatures and cloud coverage kept overnight temperatures above or right at freezing for a majority of lower elevation terrain (>9000ft). Minor loose wet activity has been taking place daily in the middle to lower elevations with the combination of recent snow the past week, warm temperatures, and solar gain. Today again, with the addition of new snow and or potentially rain in the mid to lower elevations, residual existing soft snow, and potential greenhouse effects from cloud cover, be keenly aware of loose wet avalanche potential on All Aspects…especially at the Middle to Lower elevations. If you’re experiencing wet, sticky conditions, roller balling or pin wheeling of snow or conditions where it seems unsupportable, better to come back another day when conditions improve. Even a small slide may be quite hazardous if you find yourself in the wrong place at the right time. Avoid skiing above terrain traps or exposed terrain where a wet sluff could drag you and bury you in a depression or through nasty obstacles. Also be keenly aware of what may affect you from above, pay attention to picking stopping points or up tracks that are not exposed from steep shedding terrain.

  Biggest accumulations of new snow will likely be found around the Mammoth Lakes area and depending on the outcome of snow totals today and tonight , be prepared for potential storm slab in the Upper and Middle elevations especially on W-NW-N-NE-E-SE aspects. Warm temperatures will help new snow bond well, but there is also a wide variety of old snow surfaces such as temperature crusts and windshorn areas that may aid in new snow being unstable or sensitive to skier trigger today.
