You can trigger an avalanche on most shady slopes at the highest elevations of the Grand Mesa and the Flat Tops. The most dangerous slopes are uneven, shallow, rocky slopes facing northwest, through north to southeast near and above treeline. Avoid these areas of concern to reduce your chances of triggering a large and dangerous avalanche.
You might be able to trigger a smaller but still dangerous avalanche in the new snow, especially at higher elevations. If you find more than a foot of new snow on a slope steeper than about 35 degrees consider sticking to lower-angle terrain and avoid slopes with terrain traps such as a cliff, a creek, or a gully below you.
