Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A moist westerly flow with embedded shortwaves is forecasted to develop late Saturday night and continue through Monday bringing snowfall to the region. One to three inches of new snow is expected by Sunday morning with an additional two to four inches during the day. Ridgetop winds should be Westerly at 15 to 25 mph. Mountain temperatures are projected to fall to near zero before rising into the teens during the day on Sunday. In the Teton area, the General Avalanche Hazard is MODERATE and will rise as new snow accumulates. Surface slabs one to three feet in depth will increase with new snow, and could be human triggered in wind loaded starting zones. Mid pack weaknesses are adjusting to recent loads, but caution is still advised. The general avalanche hazard in the Continental Divide/Togwotee Pass and Southwest Trails/Greys River areas is also MODERATE and on the rise. In these areas, surface slabs one to three feet in depth could be released by backcountry travelers in wind loaded starting zones. In addition, mid pack and full depth hard slab avalanches could be human triggered in areas with buried layers of weak, faceted snow.
