Avalanche Activity

SC for 2.4: Isolated instabilities will persist in deep deposits on SE to SW aspects above 950m. Avalanche hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: The new snow will start to consolidate as the day progresses. However, instabilities will persist in deeper accumulations above 950 metres on South-East to South-West aspects. Most of these areas will be isolated and avoidable with greatest hazard found on steep terrain around corrie rims and gully tops, mainly on the highest hills along the Northern boundary of this forecast area. Old snow will remain firm and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Very light snowfall to all levels overnight. Dry during the day with the freezing level lifting to around 900 metres. Winds generally quite light but strengthening mid afternoon from the North-North-West. Observed Weather Influences: Limited snowfall overnight but dry throughout the day. Initially cold, -6 degrees celsius at 930 metres but by afternoon this had risen to 0 degrees. Winds were very light. ObservedSnowStability: Moderately bonded accumulations are to be found, mainly on steep wind sheltered terrain on South-East to South-West aspects above 950 metres. Deeper drifts are also found at lower altitudes but these are very isolated. Gully tops and corrie rims are particularly affected. Wind exposed areas are scoured and old snow is firm and icy. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
