NC for 30.1: Isolated unstable windslab developing on NW to NE aspects above 800m. The old snowpack will be stable. Low Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: During the afternoon isolated, shallow accumulations of unstable windslab will begin to develop on North-West to North-East aspects above 800 metres. Areas most affected will be in steep wind sheltered locations such as at the tops of gullies and beneath corrie rims. The old snowpack will remain well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: A dry night with strong North-Westerly winds easing moderate to light. Snowfall is expected through the afternoon on Southerly winds which will steadily increase strong to gale force. The 600 metre freezing level will rise later in the day to 900 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Rain turned to light snowfall above 800 metres at around midday. Severe Westerly gales eased a little during the afternoon. The freezing level lowered to around 900 metres. ObservedSnowStability: There is a dusting of new snow above 800 metres. The old snowpack remains well bonded and stable at all altitudes. The most widespread patches are on North-West through North to North-Easterly aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low.
