Kernpunkte

On Sunday in the Monument, avalanches will be possible on open slopes at and above treeline, where the wind has deposited recent snowfall. Strong recent SW winds and warming temperatures have resulted in a variety of surface conditions throughout the zone. The most enjoyable snow conditions will likely also be the safest from avalanche hazard - treed and sheltered zones at lower elevations.

    While there has not been significant new snow accumulation over the last few days at the Monument, there have been strong enough winds in the past 48 hours to transport old snow and form cohesive slabs on open leeward terrain. Saturday's weather and Sunday's outlook will likely have these lingering wind slabs trending towards small and less reactive, however active assessment is still required. Leeward terrain features that tend to catch wind blown snow (below ridges, open bowls, etc.) will be the most likely culprits for where reactive slabs may exist. Rippled or smooth snow surfaces can also be a good indicator of wind drifted snow. Use extra caution when above certain terrain traps (i.e. trees and cliffs) that may make a slide more consequential. If in doubt, stick to low angle terrain or sheltered zones where the slopes have not been effected by wind.

Avalanche Discussion

On Saturday I observed a variety of surface conditions in the monument. Through the morning and into the afternoon, it was actively raining (the PNW classic of light, misty precip) at lower elevations near and above the lakes. By the time I made it up to our weather station mid-morning, there was active riming plastering an ice layer over my goggles as well as creating a thin rime crust on open aspects with a westward tilt. While this rime crust mostly had characteristics of a soft, thin, "zipper" crust, certain areas such as the upper NW chutes had a more stout and textured breakable surface crust. By late morning, I observed a transition to light, wet snowfall above 7500 ft. Mid and low elevation treed areas seemed to be the most reliable for a soft, smooth snow surface and enjoyable wet pow conditions.
