You could trigger a wet and heavy avalanche in deeper, soft snow on top of a hard, icy snow surface. Watch out for soft or wet snow on steep slopes that is deeper than the top of your boot. Travel on firm snow surfaces and watch out for areas of deeper soft snow to reduce your chances of being caught in a heavy, powerful avalanche.

    What and where is it:The largest and most dangerous wet snow avalanches will likely be found on steep, easterly aspects below 5500 feet in elevation, but it is possible to find wet avalanche hazards on all aspects today. In isolated east-facing areas, like Tuckerman Ravine, it may be possible to find and trigger a more connected wet slab avalanche. 

    How can you recognize it: Watch for areas of soft snow up to 12 inches thick on top of a hard, icy old snow surface. Large areas of bright white and smooth snow that are becoming wet are the most likely places to find the avalanche problem and will be in contrast to the gray, icy old snow surface. Look for snow falling off rocks in steep terrain, roller balls on the surface snow, and soft snow that is wet-to-the-touch as signs of the avalanche hazard.How can you manage it:Be skeptical of areas of deeper, softer snow that are becoming wet as temperatures increase and the sun creates additional warming. Traveling on the hard, old snow surface can help mitigate the risk of triggering a wet avalanche, but will require crampons and an ice ax to prevent a dangerous fall in steep terrain.

Yesterday’s wind slabs will become today’s wet avalanche problem. In areas with less new snow accumulation, wet loose avalanches are likely to be small but they could still cause a fall in steep terrain due to their weight and power. In most areas, you are likely to find wet loose, but in isolated areas that developed deeper wind slabs yesterday, such as steep slopes in Tuckerman Ravine, it is possible to find a larger, more destructive wet slab avalanche. 

In many areas, you will still encounter a widespread hard, icy old snow surface. This snow surface could act as an effective sliding surface for avalanches today. This hard surface also increases the risk and consequence of a fall in steep terrain. Using crampons, ice axes, and a helmet can help mitigate the risk of a dangerous fall.

If you stop encountering the old snow surface, make consistent snow observations to identify the size and sensitivity of the wet avalanche problem. Expect the distribution, size, and sensitivity of wet avalanches to be variable based on your elevation and aspect. The snow surface could be highly variable, even within the same terrain feature.
