Kernpunkte

Avalanche danger is considerable at all elevations and human triggered avalanches remain likely. Expect to find storm snow capable of sliding on slopes steeper than 30 degrees, especially in areas that hold a northerly component. Wind slabs on leeward west, north, and east aspects should be considered if venturing into wind exposed terrain. Looking for feedback like recent avalanches and shooting cracks are clear indications that these problems are still reactive.

    The wind has been blowing from a south and southeast direction for nearly 48 hours straight. Leeward west, north, and east aspects have been on the receiving end. With plenty of snow available for transport, drifted snow will be most likely to trigger on steep convex wind exposed terrain features. Open slopes below ridgelines, chutes, and gullies are all locations to assess for this problem. Paying attention to wind textured and wind lipped surfaces, changes in snow density, and hollow sounding pillow like snow appearance, are areas that reflect recent wind loading.    

    24 hours of a south and southeast wind direction at light speeds with moderate to strong gusts.

    Multiple feet of storm snow exist at the upper elevations with over a foot at the lower elevations. With the potential for more snow today, instabilities may start to rise. Rapid snowfall rates, shooting cracks, and avalanche activity are what to be on the lookout for. Exercise caution around convex rollovers and shallow spots in the snowpack, as these are likely trigger points. Skiing one at a time and avoiding terrain traps are the best practices for a safe backcountry outing.

    It's that time of year again where even the slightest bit of sun can cause snow surfaces to warm and become unstable. This problem is most likely to occur at the lower elevations where temperatures are naturally warmer.  If you observe point releases or roller balls, then you know snow surfaces are becoming unstable. 

    Wet-loose activity on a surface that recieved sun and became moist and unstable. 

Avalanche Discussion

With limited field observations made over the past24 hours, we encourage folks not to let their guard down or underestimate all the new snow.  Continue to exercise caution when traveling in the backcountry.  

The snowpack does not like rapid changes, and with more snow on the way, changes are inevitable. Remember… today's snow surface could be tomorrow's weak layer, and when the snow is the problem, terrain is the solution.
