Kernpunkte

A winter storm will bring 6–10 inches of snow to terrain above 6,500 feet today. Fresh snow will fall on a smorgasbord of surfaces. Southwesterly wind will join the feast. Low danger this morning will rise to moderate this afternoon. Pay attention to areas of rapid snow accumulation. New snow instability is possible in avalanche terrain.

    Expect changing conditions. Primary avalanche risk will lie within new snow. As you travel in the backcountry, pay attention to terrain that has received six or more inches of fresh snow and/or wind deposited snow. Wind will blow out of the southwest, shifting to the west and northwest over the next 24 hours. Snow surfaces in our prime avalanche starting zones are icy, firm and slick! Cold snow may not bond well.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday wrapped up a two-day north wind event that ravaged near and above treeline terrain. Despite a lot of visible blowing snow, the majority of it collected in the bottom of low angle bowls and gullies. Existing unstable snow is hard to find. Your avalanche risk assessment should be focused within fresh snow today. West of the interstate in the Eddy Mountains, the snowpack is becoming usable. Snow depths average 3 feet on all aspects above 6,500 feet. Snow surfaces in avalanche terrain have uniform coverage and are capable of producing an avalanche. Keep your whiskers tuned if you find yourself in the Eddy's. The Castle Lake area is boasting a meager 10 inches of snow at our weather station location. Winter recreation is still on hold.
