Today it's unlikely but not impossible to find pockets of unstable wind drifted snow on steep, leeward aspects above treeline. Slopes holding wind-affected surfaces or receiving actively blowing snow should be carefully evaluated. Identify features of concern and seek mellower terrain if you experience shooting cracks underfoot.

    An inch of new snow fell near treeline on Mount Shasta overnight, with the potential for more at higher elevations. Active northwest winds may have had enough ammunition to craft small, reactive drifts. These drifts will be confined to the leeward sides of ridgelines, rock outcrops, and rollovers and will be most sensitive above treeline near exposed and convex terrain steeper than 35 degrees. Fresh wind lips will point towards areas of recent wind loading. If you encounter locally deeper drifts, assess for reactivity and manage those areas with conservative travel—or avoid them altogether. Even a small amount of unstable snow can have serious consequences in extreme terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday’s storm was underwhelming, with many elevations only receiving rain. However, Mount Shasta picked up a solid inch of new snow near treeline, suggesting two to three inches may have fallen at higher elevations.

Surface conditions yesterday were damp up to 8,500 feet due to high humidity and misty and rainy weather. While snowfall amounts were less than expected, the new snow likely bonded well. The wet conditions have also aided in some faceted  surfaces around the area to become more cohesive and better bonded—a positive development. Forecasters will continue monitoring these areas as additional snow falls and provide updates as conditions evolve.

Looking ahead, winter is expected to make a heated comeback. It will be vital to avoid complacency with powder fever, stay tuned to changing conditions, and keep your avalanche awareness sharp.
